Scoular has designated its grain handling facility in Adrian, Missouri, as a sustainability showcase hub. The facility, which was built in 2012 and underwent extensive upgrades in 2022, now incorporates a range of features to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Some of the sustainability features already in use at the facility include variable frequency drive motors on bunker fans, a system to track fuel and energy usage per bushel, and testing of lower-emission equipment. More initiatives are planned for 2024, including an on-site solar panel system and an environmental health and safety training center.
Scoular plans to use the Adrian facility to test and develop sustainability solutions for farmers, feed and food customers, and the greater community. The company will also share its results and lessons learned with others.
Scoular regional manager TJ Mandl calls the Adrian facility the "elevator of the future." He envisions it as a testing ground for everything from operational sustainability strategies to regenerative agriculture practices.
