The University of Missouri Extension’s Show-Me-Select (SMS) Replacement Heifer Program is helping cattle producers improve herd quality while gaining more profit from certified heifers. Created in 1996, this statewide initiative educates beef producers on proper heifer development using science-based methods. The program encourages better management, genetic selection, and breeding strategies to ensure healthy, high-performing cattle.
Every year, cow-calf producers must replace aging or non-breeding cows with new heifers. The SMS program helps these producers raise or select heifers with stronger reproductive and productive traits. It ensures that replacement heifers are well-managed early in life, which is key to their future health and productivity.
SMS heifers are certified after meeting high-quality standards, making them attractive in the livestock market. According to a recent study by state extension experts, SMS-certified heifers earned an average price premium of $420.58 between 2018 and 2024 compared to non-certified heifers sold in Missouri auctions.
Regional data showed varying premium values. Southwest Missouri topped the list with an average premium of $1,240.65, followed by West Central ($911.57) and South Central ($624.68). These differences highlight how market demand and program adoption can vary by area.
Over 2,900 SMS heifers were used to calculate the premium values, proving the program’s strong impact. These certified heifers are now viewed as a dependable source of quality cattle due to their genetic strength and health standards.
“SMS-certified heifers offer consistent value to buyers and long-term benefits to producers,” said the program’s specialists.
In conclusion, the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program continues to support Missouri’s beef industry by combining education, science, and better farm economics. It not only raises the standard for heifer quality but also helps producers earn better returns through value-added marketing.
