US Hog Numbers Dip Slightly in New Report

By Jamie Martin

The latest Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that U.S. farms held 73.7 million hogs and pigs as of June 1, 2026. This figure is slightly lower than last year and the previous quarter.

Among the total, 67.8 million were market hogs raised for sale, while 5.88 million were used for breeding. These figures suggest that the industry continues to maintain a balanced production system.

From March through May 2026, producers weaned 33.5 million pigs. This number is slightly higher than last year, indicating steady productivity. The average number of pigs per litter reached 11.87, showing little change and consistent efficiency on farms.

Future production plans also remain stable. Producers expect 2.90 million sows to farrow between June and August 2026. Additionally, 2.89 million sows are planned for farrowing from September through November 2026.

Regional data continues to show strong concentration in key states. Iowa remains the top producer with 24.7 million hogs. Minnesota follows with 9.30 million, while North Carolina holds third place with 7.20 million.

The data for this report was collected from 4,254 hog operators across the United States. The survey used online systems, mail, phone interviews, and in-person visits to ensure accurate and reliable information.

The overall findings highlight a steady U.S. swine sector with only minor changes in inventory and consistent production trends across the country.
