USDA Begins 2025 Organic Survey

USDA Begins 2025 Organic Survey

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has announced the start of the 2025 Organic Survey, a nationwide study designed to update key information about the organic farming sector. As a special study under the Census of Agriculture Program, this survey plays an important role in understanding how organic agriculture contributes to the national farm economy.

Beginning in early December, NASS will mail survey codes to producers so they can complete the survey online quickly and securely. A full paper questionnaire will follow in early January for those who prefer a mail-in option. The last Organic Survey was completed in 2021, and the new 2025 edition will collect updated data on acreage, production, marketing choices, income, expenses, and farm practices related to organic operations.

“Organic agriculture is a growing industry, and it is our job as a federal statistical agency to help measure this part of the agriculture sector,” said NASS Administrator Joseph Parsons. “We are excited to provide data on organic agriculture that will help inform organic producers and other industry professionals to make informed decisions for their operations.”

The 2025 Organic Survey is required by federal law, and all information provided by farmers and ranchers is kept strictly confidential. Producers who receive the survey are encouraged to respond either online at agcounts.usda.gov or by mail. All responses must be submitted by February 5, 2026.

The survey will be sent to all known certified organic farms and ranches, along with producers who are transitioning toward organic certification. Questions will focus on a wide range of factors, including production levels, sales, acreage, and marketing practices. This information is essential for understanding the economic value and growth of organic agriculture in the United States.

Final results from the survey will be released on October 30, 2026. These results will help guide future investments, educational programs, and research supporting organic producers across the country.
