USDA boosts clean energy in rural America

By Jamie Martin

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has unveiled substantial new funding aimed at empowering rural America through clean energy advancements. This initiative includes significant financial injections through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) and the Empowering Rural America (New ERA) program, which are designed to reduce energy bills and generate employment.

During a recent announcement in Pennsylvania, Vilsack detailed plans for 654 grants that would assist small businesses and farms across the U.S. to adopt energy-efficient systems. This effort is bolstered by an additional $600 million in REAP funds, accessible until March 2025.

The initiative, fueled by the Inflation Reduction Act, signifies the largest U.S. investment in climate action, with more than $2.4 billion already deployed in renewable energy projects nationwide since the onset of the administration. These projects not only aim to enhance sustainability but also to fortify the economic backbone provided by rural areas.

Particularly noteworthy is the $20.5 million grant to Allegheny Electric Cooperative in Pennsylvania, set to meet over 80% of its power needs with carbon-free sources by 2026. This move is expected to significantly cut energy costs and mitigate climate pollution, equivalent to powering nearly 18,000 homes.

Secretary Vilsack emphasized the administration's commitment to ensuring that rural communities receive the resources they need to thrive, highlighting the potential for these investments to substantially lower operating costs for rural businesses and enhance their competitive edge in a green economy.
