Master pork production with Intel for Ag - a Missouri guide

Master pork production with Intel for Ag - a Missouri guide

By Blake Jackson

The average person in Missouri consumes a whopping 63 pounds of pork annually. Thinking about raising pigs to meet this demand? Intel for Ag (https://intelforag.org/) can be your guide.

"This free website from University of Missouri Extension educates producers on farm enterprises that best suit their land, skills, and markets," explains Mallory Rahe, a state specialist and contributor. "Especially for those considering pasture-raised pigs, Intel for Ag offers valuable resources to assess feasibility."

A key feature of Intel for Ag is the Market Intelligence report. It dives deep into consumer demand and preferences for various animal products, including pork.

By estimating animal product consumption per person and Missouri county, Intel for Ag empowers producers to visualize their sales potential.

“For example, if pork consumption is stronger in urban areas than in the producer’s home county, that producer might explore ways to market products farther from the farm,” she said. “The site’s data help producers be strategic about what they raise and where they sell their products.”

This valuable resource goes beyond just quantity. The report also explores consumer preferences for product characteristics. Do they prioritize freshness? Local sourcing? Understanding these details allows producers to refine their marketing strategies.

“By aligning their marketing messages and packaging with what their target customers value most, producers can maximize their sales potential,” Rahe said.

Intel for Ag offers a wealth of additional resources, including:

  • Sustainable Enterprise.
  • Knowledge Center.
  • Land Suitability.

Combined with market insights, these tools provide a comprehensive picture of animal production options for your specific farm. The grant funding, Intel for Ag has expanded its resources to include not just pork, but also poultry, beef, dairy, and other animal products.
