The 2022 University of Missouri Extension State 4-H Sportfishing SLAM, March through June, challenged youths to stretch their fishing skills and knowledge.
The SLAM offers nine categories made up of varying species, habitats and baits. More than half of the participants reported that the contest increased their knowledge of fish species and fishing equipment, techniques and terminology, said Maria Calvert, Missouri 4-H state agriculture and natural resources educator.
Awards were given for those with the largest catch per recognized species. Catches included largemouth bass -- Audrey Wolfe, Cooper County; channel catfish -- Barett Bentley, Jasper County; rainbow trout -- Kendra Stille, Montgomery County; bluegill -- Jesse Watkins, Stoddard County, and Isaac Mabary, Polk County; green sunfish -- Isaac Mabary, Polk County; black crappie -- Isaac Mabary, Polk County; white crappie -- Jesse Watkins, Stoddard County; walleye -- Audrey Wolfe, Cooper County.
