2025 Master gardener course - register by January 21

By Blake Jackson

Is becoming an Extension Master Gardener on your New Year’s resolution list, or perhaps on the wish list of someone you know? University of Missouri Extension will begin its 2025 Master Gardener training on January 23 in Boone County.

The program equips volunteers with the knowledge to assist in public horticulture education, says Debi Kelly, MU Extension Master Gardener coordinator. "The course prepares Extension Master Gardener volunteers to answer frequently asked horticulture questions with unbiased, research-based gardening information."

This 15-session course, running through April 10, covers a wide range of topics including plant care, soil science, pruning, pest and disease management, fruit and vegetable cultivation, herbaceous ornamentals, and residential landscaping.

To earn the Extension Master Gardener certification, participants must complete the training and volunteer 30 hours. Classes take place on Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. at the MU Extension Center in Boone County (1012 N. Highway UU, Columbia).

There are also two hands-on sessions on Saturdays, March 15 and April 5, from 10 a.m. to noon at the MU Jefferson Farm and Garden in Columbia.

“Give the gift of gardening this holiday season,” Kelly suggests. “The Extension Master Gardeners course makes the perfect gift for someone who has always wanted to learn the ins and outs of gardening and give back to their communities.”

The course costs $200. Registration is open until January 21, 2025, at this link. For more information, contact Kelly at kellyd@missouri.edu.
