Advanced breeding heifers up for sale

Advanced breeding heifers up for sale

By Blake Jackson

The Show-Me-Select (SMS) Replacement Heifer Program, led by the University of Missouri Extension, is set to hold its fall heifer sale this November, providing an excellent opportunity for cattle producers to enhance their herds with genetically superior heifers.

The sale will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 15, at the Joplin Regional Stockyards near Carthage, Missouri.

Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist, describes the SMS program as a critical resource for cattle producers interested in advanced heifer development strategies.

“The Missouri Show-Me-Select (SMS) Replacement Heifer Program educates cattle producers on heifer development strategies in the areas of management, reproduction and genetics to create a reliable source of quality replacement heifers,” says Davis.

Approximately 118 spring-calving bred heifers, due from February to April, will be available for purchase. These heifers represent a variety of breeds, including Angus, Akaushi, Balancer, Beefmaster, Gelbvieh, Red Angus, and Hereford.

Most of these commercial bred heifers are either purebred or crossbred, with 62% featuring black or black, white face, and the remaining 38% being red or red, white face.

The diverse genetic makeup of these heifers, many of whom are crossbreds, introduces hybrid vigor, enhancing their production capabilities and longevity.

Davis highlights the advantages of purchasing SMS-certified heifers, especially those that are artificially inseminated. “Many of the heifers have been artificially inseminated (AI) and carrying a pregnancy from a high-accuracy AI sire,” he explains. This breeding approach not only predicts the performance of future progeny more reliably but also aids producers in selecting heifers that will positively impact their operations' economic outcomes.

SMS heifers are meticulously prepared through a research-based development program from weaning until the sale day. This program focuses on optimal growth, reproduction, and health management.

Each heifer is bred to ensure ease of birthing and has undergone multiple pregnancy checks to confirm the most accurate calving dates.

By participating in this sale, cattle producers have the chance to acquire well-developed heifers that are poised to contribute robustly to the productivity and sustainability of any livestock operation.
