Boost cattle profits with MO steer feedout

By Blake Jackson

Understanding how cattle perform in the feedlot is crucial for enhancing the profitability of cow-calf operations.

The Missouri Steer Feedout, a collaborative effort between MU Extension, Show Me Youth Ag Academy, and Missouri State University, offers producers a valuable opportunity to evaluate their cattle's genetics and management practices.

“Adding value to a cow-calf operation is important to its sustainability,” says Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist. “Entries for the feedout will be accepted through Oct. 10 with weigh-in projected for Nov. 18".

By participating in the feedout, producers can gain insights into feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and potential market opportunities for their cattle.

The program provides a platform to compare cattle performance, identify areas for improvement, and make informed management decisions.

Steers enrolled in the program will undergo a comprehensive evaluation, including weigh-in, grading, feedlot performance monitoring, and carcass data collection.

Participants will receive detailed reports on their cattle's performance, allowing them to refine their breeding and management strategies.

Beyond the benefits to participating producers, the program also serves as an educational resource for youth and industry professionals.

By engaging with the feedout, students can gain hands-on experience in cattle feeding, management, and marketing. Additionally, the program provides valuable data for research and industry analysis.

The Missouri Steer Feedout is a valuable asset to the state's cattle industry, offering producers a pathway to improve their operations and contribute to the ongoing development of best practices.
