Crop Progress Ahead of Schedule Despite Cooler Weather


Farmers in the United States had 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 17, 2023. Temperatures averaged 65.9 degrees Fahrenheit, 2.6 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.39 inches, 0.69 inches below normal.

Corn

Corn dented reached 97 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 94 percent. Corn mature reached 70 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 61 percent. Corn harvested for grain reached 19 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 14 percent. Corn condition rated 16 percent very poor, 24 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 31 percent good, and 2 percent excellent.

Soybeans

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 38 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 18 percent. Soybean condition rated 6 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 5 percent excellent.

Cotton

Cotton bolls opening reached 39 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 56 percent. Cotton condition rated 4 percent poor, 39 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 5 percent excellent.

Rice

Rice harvested reached 27 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 20 percent. Rice condition rated 17 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 29 percent excellent.

Crop progress continues to advance ahead of schedule, despite cooler and drier weather conditions. Corn and cotton harvests are underway, and rice harvest is gaining momentum. Soybean harvest is expected to begin soon. Overall, crop conditions are good to excellent.
