The University of Missouri Extension is offering a free program focused on dairy cow lactation on September 18.
This educational event, taking place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fisher Delta Research, Extension and Education Center in Portageville, invites dairy producers to gain deeper insights into the anatomy and functionality of the mammary gland.
Reagan Bluel, MU Extension field specialist in dairy, emphasizes the significance of understanding the mammary gland's role in milk production. “The bovine’s ability to convert feed into nutritious and delicious dairy products is awe-inspiring,” Bluel notes. “The mammary gland houses millions of productive cells and complex ductwork. These anatomical features working in concert with the endocrine system allows the cow to provide for mankind.”
During the program, attendees will participate in an udder dissection, exploring the mammary gland's structure and its vital functions in milk production.
Bluel will guide participants through the anatomical details, offering valuable insights into effective mastitis prevention and treatment, which is crucial for managing one of the dairy industry's most costly diseases.
While the event is free, participants are encouraged to RSVP for lunch by calling 417-847-3161.
