Empowering Youth in Agriculture: Missouri 4-H and FFA Host Crop Scouting Event to Foster Agronomic Knowledge and Career Pathways

University of Missouri Extension and Missouri 4-H, in collaboration with FFA chapters, are organizing an engaging crop scouting event for 4-H and FFA members and volunteers on July 18. Taking place at the MU Bradford Research Farm near Columbia, the event aims to educate participants on common Missouri crops, insect pests, diseases, disorders, and weeds, while also emphasizing pesticide safety and showcasing potential careers in agronomy. This year's expanded program welcomes FFA chapters to enhance the learning experience and meet the growing demand for agricultural education.

Maria Calvert, MU Extension state 4-H agriculture educator, highlights the significance of this learning opportunity, stating that participants will have the chance to develop and test their knowledge and skills in this vital area of agronomy. The event will provide a platform for young individuals to directly engage with MU Extension specialists, who specialize in finding solutions to agronomic challenges. The enthusiasm displayed by students from various regions in attending the previous year's event highlights the value of such a scouting program.

Mandy Bish, MU Extension state field crop pathologist, emphasizes the collaboration's importance, expressing excitement about the partnership with 4-H and the support received from the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council. The event's success lies in offering hands-on experiences and fostering a deeper understanding of crop scouting practices among the participants.

By combining experiential learning with direct interaction with experts, the crop scouting event equips youth with practical skills, deepens their knowledge of Missouri's agricultural landscape, and nurtures their interest in pursuing agronomy-related careers. Missouri 4-H, with its more than 55,000 active members, is committed to empowering young people as leaders, making a tangible difference in their communities and beyond.
