The annual Southwest Missouri All Breeds Performance Tested Bull Sale is set for March 30, offering cattle producers an opportunity to invest in high-quality genetics.
“The Southwest Missouri All Breeds Performance Tested Bull Sale will take place on March 30,” says Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist.
The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Springfield Livestock Marketing Center in Springfield and is organized by the Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association.
This year’s sale includes 27 bulls-22 Angus, three Gelbvieh and two SimAngus. The offering is carefully developed using both genomics and detailed performance data. “This sale utilizes genomics and performance metrics in the development of its bull offering,” says Davis.
Bulls must meet strict eligibility requirements, including above-average expected progeny differences (EPDs) in at least three of six categories: calving ease direct, weaning weight, yearling weight, milk, marbling and ribeye area. Genomic testing is also required to further verify genetic merit.
Davis emphasizes that this screening process helps ensure buyers select herd sires with strong performance potential.
“MU Extension will host an educational session to discuss using EPDs when purchasing bulls,” says Davis. The session, called “Buying Bulls by the Numbers,” is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the sale arena before the sale begins.
