The University of Missouri Extension’s Show-Me-Select replacement heifer program is set to host six regional sales this fall, offering buyers a unique opportunity to acquire high-quality heifers with exceptional productive and reproductive potential.
“Show-Me-Select is a program that benefits sellers and buyers,” said Thiago Martins, state extension beef reproduction specialist. “Sellers are rewarded for raising heifers under a total quality strategic plan developed by the University of Missouri Extension,” Martins said. “Buyers get replacement heifers with high productive and reproductive potential. Buying Show-Me-Select replacement heifers is a long-term investment that pays off as the heifers remain longer in the herd.”
Martins emphasized the long-term value of investing in Show-Me-Select heifers, which are backed by rigorous health, nutrition, genetics, and reproductive science.
These heifers have been sold to buyers in 21 states since the program’s inception in 1997, and over 900 Missouri farms have participated.
Show-Me-Select goes beyond traditional certification, offering buyers additional value through Show-Me-Plus.
This secondary classification provides genomic information, including genomically enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPD) and commercial genomic test results.
“The value of Show-Me-Plus is the ability to provide insight into a heifer’s genetic potential not only for fertility but other economically important traits,” said Jamie Courter, assistant professor and state beef extension specialist.
The Show-Me-Select program has had a significant economic impact on Missouri, with an estimated statewide impact of $200 million.
