Farm Bill Delays Put Farmers at Risk

Farm Bill Delays Put Farmers at Risk

By Blake Jackson

More than 130 farmers, ranchers, and advocates recently gathered in Washington, D.C., urging lawmakers to address the federal funding freeze and pass a new farm bill. Many farmers rely on government support to sustain their operations, and delays in funding are creating financial hardships.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC), a nonprofit that promotes sustainable farming, organized the event to highlight concerns over stalled conservation funds. These funds support vital agricultural programs, including soil health initiatives and water resource protection.

"Farmers aren't receiving their payments despite lawfully signed contracts with USDA," said Mike Lavender, NSAC’s policy director. "If they have to use their savings to cover costs that their conservation contract can't cover, maybe they don't have enough in savings for their mortgage payment, or to pay off their loan."

NSAC is advocating for a bipartisan farm bill that strengthens conservation programs, enhances farm safety measures, and supports a more resilient food system. The last farm bill was enacted nearly seven years ago, and agriculture has changed significantly since then. Lavender noted that challenges such as climate change, economic shifts, and lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the need for updated policies.

Farmers and advocates argue that the stalled funding is not only affecting agricultural operations but also leading to broader consequences. Organizations that provide support services are being forced to lay off staff, cancel programs, and reduce essential assistance to farmers and communities in need.

The coalition is calling on Congress to act swiftly to pass legislation that ensures stability for farmers and the agricultural sector. Without timely action, financial uncertainty will continue to impact food production, conservation efforts, and rural economies.
