Florida Farmers Protect Earth through Daily Practices

Florida Farmers Protect Earth through Daily Practices

By Jamie Martin

On a Florida farm in Palm Beach County, Earth Day values are practiced year-round. This family farm produces certified organic vegetables like cabbage, tomatoes, zucchini, and cucumbers, alongside beef cattle and herbs.

The farm conserves resources by flooding fields with rainwater in summer to reduce pests without chemicals. This technique also protects soil and recharges underground water supplies.

Careful soil testing helps apply only the right amount of fertilizer, preventing phosphate runoff and protecting water quality. As the owner says, "We are proud that we can serve as natural resource stewards as we contribute to the foundation of life for everyone."

The farm’s food safety is also a priority. A team member checks produce daily to ensure it is fresh and safe. Despite lacking price support from the government, they grow and sell food independently, facing pressure from cheaper imports.

The farm also maintains open land to control erosion and supports the environment with controlled burns. This method removes invasive species, supports native plants, and preserves wildlife habitats.

The farm contributes to the local economy by employing 50 full-time workers. According to the University of Florida/IFAS, agriculture in the area supports over 194,000 jobs.

Farmers across the country, including those in Florida, help keep the nation secure by producing healthy food locally. Their everyday work conserves nature and feeds families, proving that Earth Day is every day on the farm.
