For cattle producers aiming to accelerate their herd's genetic improvement, the University of Missouri Extension is offering a hands-on artificial insemination workshop in southwestern Missouri. Dairy specialist Reagan Bluel highlights the workshop's practical approach.
Scheduled for April 22-24, the "Artificial Insemination for Cattle" workshop will provide comprehensive training.
The initial classroom session, held Tuesday afternoon at FCS Financial in Joplin, will cover essential topics like anatomy, heat detection, estrus synchronization, and reproductive nutrition.
The hands-on portion, beginning April 23 at Joplin Regional Stockyards in Carthage, will allow participants to practice the entire insemination process multiple times.
Bluel emphasizes that this practical experience ensures mastery of the technique. Participants will also learn proper semen handling, blood draw, and hair sampling.
With a limited class size of 12, participants receive personalized instruction in a supportive environment, regardless of their skill level. All necessary insemination equipment and materials are provided, courtesy of sponsor Select Sires.
The workshop costs $525, with enrollment on a first-paid, first-served basis. Interested individuals can register at https://extension.missouri.edu/events/ai-school or visit the MU Extension Center in Barry County. For inquiries, call 417-847-3161.
