On Tuesday, June 6, a free on-farm workshop will take place at the Webb City Farmers Market's Fruit Education Site, located on the Lykou Lee Farm in Neosho, Missouri. Led by Patrick Byers from University of Missouri Extension and Angela Brattin, this interactive workshop aims to provide valuable insights into various aspects of fruit cultivation.
The workshop will cover a range of topics through hands-on discussions led by the experts, including blackberry harvest techniques, site preparation for blueberries (to be done six months prior to planting), blackberry pest trapping and management strategies, as well as fertility management for both blackberries and elderberries.
This educational event welcomes both commercial and hobbyist growers, as well as consumers who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of how their food is grown. It is part of a workshop series funded through a Missouri Department of Agriculture Specialty Crops Block Grant, with a focus on cultivating blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, and elderberries.
Attendees can expect an engaging and informative session, conducted primarily in English, with Hmong translation services available. Furthermore, this workshop is just one of several planned throughout the year, enabling participants to follow the progress of these crops during the growing season.
For additional information about the workshop or the Fruit Education Site, individuals are encouraged to contact Angela Brattin via call or text at 417-439-3704. This hands-on workshop presents an invaluable opportunity for growers and consumers alike to deepen their knowledge of fruit production, fostering a greater appreciation for the journey from farm to table.
