On June 25, 2024, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, the primary concern in sheep and goat production systems continues to be internal parasites, exacerbated by increasing resistance to anthelmintic treatments.
This challenge poses a significant hurdle for small ruminant enterprises, necessitating a shift towards integrated parasite management strategies. To address these issues, Dr. Joan Burke, a distinguished Research Animal Scientist at USDA-ARS since 1999, will lead a webinar on "Integrated Parasite Management for Sheep and Goats."
Dr. Burke's expertise lies in comprehensive gastrointestinal parasite control in small ruminants, advocating for holistic approaches that extend beyond traditional anthelmintic treatments.
Her research, backed by numerous publications and practical resources, emphasizes the importance of strategies such as genetic selection for parasite resistance, proper use of anthelmintics, monitoring through fecal egg counts, and implementing tools like FAMACHA for strategic deworming.
This informative webinar, facilitated by Dr. David Brown, MU Sheep & Goats Specialist, will equip participants with essential knowledge on worm biology, sustainable parasite control practices, and effective management techniques.
Registration for this event is free but mandatory, offering invaluable insights into mitigating the impact of internal parasites on livestock health and productivity.
This event is supported by USDA/NIFA Award Number 2023-70027-40444 and North Central Extension Risk Management Education.
