Land-Grant Universities Strengthening Small-Scale Farms

USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture highlighted the work of several 1890 Land-grant Institutions in tackling challenges to small-scale agriculture and strengthening agricultural profitability and sustainability of small-scale farms.

For example, at Lincoln University, the Innovative Small Farm Outreach Program (ISFOP) was established to help Missouri’s small farmers and ranchers, especially those who are socially disadvantaged and underserved. Meanwhile, North Carolina A&T State University Extension is making plasticulture more accessible to small farmers by renting specialized machinery on a daily basis.

Tuskegee University Cooperative Extension Program and the School of Veterinary Medicine provide a series of hands-on small-scale beef cattle herd health management demonstrations.
