Selling local foods - MU extension workshop guides farmers

By Blake Jackson

The University of Missouri Extension is offering a comprehensive workshop in Hannibal, Missouri, designed to empower local food producers and farmers to thrive in the growing market for locally sourced products. The "Selling Local Foods" workshop, held on Friday, March 15th, from 9 am to 4 pm at the Admiral Coontz Armory, delves into various aspects of navigating this specific market segment.

Recognizing the increasing consumer demand for local food and the potential for entrepreneurship in this area, the workshop equips participants with essential knowledge and resources. The morning sessions focus on the crucial aspects of food safety regulations, covering the guidelines for growing, processing, and selling local food items. Additionally, participants gain valuable insights into best practices for directly marketing their products to consumers.

The afternoon sessions delve deeper into exploring alternative market options beyond traditional farmers' markets. Attendees will receive an overview of community supported agriculture (CSA) programs, the potential partnerships with restaurants and small grocers, and effective strategies for building eye-catching displays and providing exceptional customer service.

To further enrich the learning experience, the workshop concludes with a panel discussion featuring local experts from various sectors of the local food industry. This panel, including representatives like Lynn Gibson (handmade goat milk soap and skincare products), Mary Behrens (baked goods and herbs), John Poole (meat processing), Steve Huse (produce and farmers' market management), and Frank Lemongelli (environmental health specialist), offers valuable insights and practical advice based on their real-world experiences.

This workshop presents a valuable opportunity for anyone interested in starting or growing a business selling locally produced food. By providing a comprehensive learning experience, it empowers participants with the knowledge and resources they need to navigate regulations, effectively market their products, and connect with potential customers, ultimately contributing to the success of the local food movement.
