The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is hosting a prescribed burn workshop for landowners on October 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Missouri Soybean Association in Columbia.
Prescribed burning is a useful technique for maintaining native plant diversity and managing unwanted vegetation, but it must be executed carefully to be effective and safe.
This workshop is designed to teach participants the fundamentals of planning and conducting a prescribed burn as part of land management practices.
Attendance requires prior registration, which can be completed online at https://mdc.mo.gov/newsroom/learn-use-prescribed-fire-land-management-tool-mdc-oct-3-columbia. Registrants must first finish a virtual prescribed burn course, a mandatory step before participating in the in-person workshop.
There is a $25 fee for the online training, and participants should bring their certificate of completion to the event.
During the workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to observe a demonstration burn, weather permitting. For safety, participants are asked to wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts and pants made of natural fibers, leather gloves, and closed-toed leather boots.
For additional information or questions about the event, participants can contact Austin Dixon via email at Austin.dixon@mdc.mo.gov. The Missouri Soybean Association, where the workshop will be held, is located at 5601 S. Rangeline Road in Columbia.
This workshop provides an excellent opportunity for landowners to learn safe and effective techniques for using fire as a land management tool.
