Missouri MRAP Expands Public Access to Private Lands

By Blake Jackson

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is encouraging residents to take advantage of privately owned lands that are open for public recreation through the Missouri Outdoor Recreational Access Program (MRAP). The program works with landowners who voluntarily allow walk-in access for outdoor activities, expanding opportunities for hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation across the state.

MRAP continues to grow, with more than 40 enrolled properties now available to the public. One of the newest additions is Hutcheson Creek Camp, a more than 1,000-acre property near Salem in Dent County that joined the program in June. The site is open for deer archery hunting, which runs through January 15, 2026, as well as turkey archery hunting during statewide youth and regular seasons.

MRAP lands are categorized into specific access types to clearly define permitted activities. Options include all-access hunting and fishing under statewide regulations, small game and turkey hunting for designated species, youth-only hunting and fishing for participants under 16 accompanied by an adult, archery-only hunting during designated seasons, and wildlife viewing and hiking that is open year-round.

Each MRAP property is clearly marked and managed to support responsible public use while respecting private landownership. MDC provides detailed information on available sites, including maps, habitat descriptions, and access rules, to help visitors plan safe and enjoyable outdoor experiences.
