A delegation of eight Missouri farmers representing the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council (MSMC) and Missouri Soybean Association (MSA) recently embarked on an inaugural trade mission to Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
The purpose of the mission was threefold: to educate policymakers and customers, expand market opportunities, and foster leadership development within the soybean industry. Led by the Missouri Soybeans CEO and executive director, Gary Wheeler, the farmers aimed to strengthen relationships and express gratitude to vital partners in these key markets.
Europe, the second-largest overseas market for U.S. soybeans, holds immense potential for growth, with soybean meal and crush demand expected to expand significantly in the coming years. The Missouri farmers gained insights into the challenges faced by European farmers, including land access issues, deforestation concerns, and regulatory restrictions.
They recognized the importance of import markets for European customers and the growing demand for protein in the dairy industry, which presents a promising opportunity for Midwest producers.
During their journey, the Missouri growers engaged with various organizations, including food safety authorities, agricultural departments, environmental protection agencies, trade associations, and farmer unions. They also visited different farm operations, including regenerative farms and soybean fields, to witness sustainable practices firsthand.
These trade missions, supported by the soy checkoff, play a crucial role in enhancing the value and demand for Missouri soybeans. By staying connected with international markets and understanding evolving demand drivers, the soybean industry can effectively navigate the dynamic landscape.
