The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) has opened applications for the 2024 Lois Britt Memorial Pork Industry Scholarship. This scholarship program, sponsored by CME Group and the National Pork Industry Foundation, awards ten $2,500 scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing careers in the pork industry with aspirations to become industry leaders.
Scott Hays, NPPC President and pork producer, emphasized the importance of nurturing the next generation of pork industry leaders. The scholarship encourages and supports students aspiring to contribute to the pork industry's success.
The scholarship is open to undergraduate students enrolled in two-year swine programs or four-year colleges of agriculture. Applicants are evaluated based on essays that address current or future challenges facing the pork industry along with proposed solutions. Scholarship recipients will be announced during the National Pork Industry Forum in Chicago, Illinois, scheduled for March 6-8, 2024.
The Lois Britt Memorial Pork Industry Scholarship, introduced in 1990 by CME Group and NPPC, honors the legacy of Lois Britt, a former NPPC board director, and a lifelong advocate of agriculture. Britt dedicated 34 years to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and later served 15 years in public and government relations at Smithfield Hog Production. Her contributions to the pork industry led to numerous accolades, including induction into the NPPC Pork Industry Hall of Fame, the N.C. Pork Council Hall of Fame, and the receipt of the N.C. 4-H Lifetime Achievement Award.
Full eligibility and application requirements can be found here. Application deadline is January 2, 2024. Please contact Julie Schwalbe, NPPC Director of Industry Resource Development, with questions about the scholarship at 515-645-9659 or invest@nppc.org.
