On August 16, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, the University of Missouri (MU) Extension will host a workshop at Victory Freewill Baptist Church in Alton, MO, focusing on poultry management, specifically the incubation, hatching, and raising of chicks.
Led by MU Extension Livestock Specialist Elizabeth Picking and Agronomy Specialist Haley Schwantz, the event offers valuable insights for anyone interested in raising poultry.
Participants will learn about the entire process of incubating and hatching eggs, including a demonstration on candling eggs to determine if they are fertilized. Additionally, the workshop will cover methods for assessing whether eggs are fresh and safe to consume or if they are spoiled.
The workshop will also delve into bird housing needs, such as space requirements and materials. Predator control will be a key topic, with tips on how to minimize bird loss.
Schwantz will also explore forage selection and diversity, particularly for those interested in raising pasture-raised or free-range flocks.
The event is free, but pre-registration is required. Those interested can register or ask questions by contacting the Oregon County Extension Center at 417-778-7490.
Don’t miss this opportunity to gain practical knowledge in poultry management.
