Register for MDC Fire Demonstration Courses Now

When carefully planned and managed, fire can be an effective tool for land management. Prescribed burns help maintain ecosystems, but they require preparation, supervision, and on-site oversight.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering hands-on prescribed fire demonstration programs in January for those interested in learning safe burn practices. Each session runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and participants must first complete an online portion of the course.

The online class takes 2-4 hours and costs $25, paid to a third-party host. Upon completion, attendees receive a certificate, which is required to attend the in-person demonstration.

The first demonstration burn takes place on Jan. 17 at 104 Industrial Drive in Crane, Missouri. Register for first event through MDC’s online system. The second will be held on Jan. 24 at the MDC Branson Office, 226 Claremont Drive, Branson. Register link is available for second event through MDC’s online system. Participants only need to sign up for one session.

During the demonstrations, MDC Private Land Conservationist Brad Graevs will guide attendees on essential aspects of conducting a safe burn, including equipment, burn line installation, ignition techniques, and weather considerations.

Attendees are advised to dress appropriately for the burn. Recommended attire includes leather boots, leather gloves, cotton long-sleeve shirts, cotton pants, and safety glasses to ensure protection while participating in the exercises.
