The Missouri Show-Me-Select (SMS) Replacement Heifer Program aims to enhance cattle producers' knowledge in heifer development, covering management, reproduction, and genetics, ultimately creating a reliable source of high-quality replacement heifers.
According to Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist, this program is vital for the industry.
A spring sale for program participants in southwestern Missouri is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at Joplin Regional Stockyards near Carthage.
Approximately 119 SMS-certified bred heifers, expected to calve in the fall (late August to November 30), will be available for purchase.
Davis notes that the heifers represent various breeds, including Angus, Gelbvieh, Red Angus, Hereford, Simmental, Beefmaster, and their composites. These bred heifers are a mix of purebred and crossbred, with some being registered.
Their color variations include black or black whiteface and red or red whiteface. A significant portion are composite or crossbred, leveraging hybrid vigor for enhanced productivity.
Research indicates that crossbred females tend to have greater longevity, producing an average of one more calf in their lifetime compared to purebred cows.
Davis highlights that "Many of the heifers have been artificially inseminated (AI) and are carrying pregnancies from high-accuracy AI sires."
Davis advises producers to prioritize purchasing heifers with AI pregnancies, as this provides valuable insight into the anticipated performance of their offspring and aids in selecting replacements that will positively impact the cattle operation's profitability.
"An SMS heifer is a sound, blemish-free heifer that sells as a bred heifer in optimum condition," Davis emphasizes. These heifers undergo a research-based development program from weaning to sale, ensuring proper management in growth, reproduction, and health. They are bred to bulls known for producing calves with ease of birth and undergo multiple pregnancy checks for accurate calving dates.
Davis suggests that cattle producers looking to add replacement females to their herds could significantly benefit from considering SMS heifers.
Their comprehensive development program results in functional, healthy females that calve easily the first time and maintain productivity within the herd for an extended period.
