State Rice, Cotton Crops in Good to Excellent Shape



There were 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Sunday. Temperatures last week averaged 75.5 degrees, 1.6 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 2.12 inches, 1.25 inches above normal. Topsoil moisture supply rated 16 percent very short, 30 percent short and 54 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture supply rated 16 percent very short, 32 percent short and 52 percent adequate.

Corn silking was 92 percent, even with the 5-year average. Corn dough was 51 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 52 percent. Corn condition rated 11 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 43 percent good and 8 percent excellent.

Soybeans blooming was 63 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 65 percent. Soybeans setting pods was 29 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 32 percent. Soybeans condition rated 8 percent very poor, 13 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 43 percent good and 6 percent excellent.

Cotton squaring was 89 percent, even with the 5-year average. Cotton setting bolls was 64 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 53 percent. Cotton condition rated 9 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 27 percent fair and 53 percent good.

Rice headed was 32 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 43 percent. Rice condition rated 2 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 40 percent good and 16 percent excellent.
