The 99th Dade County Forage and Crops Conference, 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, in Lockwood, will feature a variety of topics of interest to livestock and forage producers, says Micah Doubledee, University of Missouri Extension agronomy specialist.
The free event is at the Lockwood Methodist Church Life Center, 410 Main St.
The recent drought, coupled with overgrazing and repetitive hay production, has left many pastures overrun with weeds and in need of repair. MU Extension agronomy specialist Terry Halleran will address these issues in a presentation titled “Building Back What We Lost in Our Forage Systems.
Since the drought has taken a toll on cool-season grasses and reduced available forage for Missouri livestock, many farmers have become interested in alternative forage sources such as native warm-season grasses. MU Extension agronomy specialist Tim Schnakenberg will give a basic overview of native grass establishment.
