USDA Reports Reveal Lower Crop Output

USDA Reports Reveal Lower Crop Output

By Jamie Martin

The USDA’s June 30 Acreage and Grain Stocks reports provided key data for the 2025 crop year, leading to revised projections for corn, wheat, and soybeans. Lower harvested acres are tightening supply expectations.

Corn planting for 2025 is pegged at 95.2 million acres, in line with market forecasts but slightly below the March Prospective Plantings survey.

Harvested acres fell by 600,000 to 87.4 million, reducing the harvest rate to 91.1%. This cut corn production estimates by 114 million bushels and dropped days of supply from 41.3 to 38.6.

June 1 Grain Stocks were 4.64 billion bushels for corn, 1.01 billion for soybeans, and 851 million for wheat. Corn usage from December through June hit a record high of 7.432 billion bushels, significantly above the five-year average.

Soybean planted area was reported at 83.4 million acres, 100,000 acres under March projections and 200,000 below trader expectations.

Harvested acreage was revised down by 200,000. Wheat acres rose slightly to 45.5 million, but harvested acres were lowered by 600,000 to 36.6 million.

These changes point to reduced new crop production for corn and wheat. Soybean stocks rose slightly due to old crop adjustments, shifting overall supply balance.

“These new acreage numbers lower corn production for 2025 and ending stocks by 114 million bushels,” according to the USDA analysis.

The upcoming WASDE reports will likely reflect these changes, adjusting forecasts and influencing market trends heading into harvest season.
