Women farmers - workshops for new farm owners

Women farmers - workshops for new farm owners

By Blake Jackson

The University of Missouri Extension is launching a series of workshops specifically designed for women who are starting out as sole operators of their farms. This "On My Own" program aims to equip these new leaders with the knowledge and resources they need to navigate the complexities of farm management.

The program arose from a recognized gap in agricultural education, as Amie Breshears, a University of Missouri Extension agricultural business specialist, explains: "Many women contact me after inheriting farms through widowhood, divorce, or simply starting their own operations. They have questions about everything from land values to fair pricing for custom work."

The workshops will address these very concerns, providing participants with a foundation in agricultural leases, land valuation, and custom work management. Participants will gain valuable insights into:

  • Different types of agricultural leases and their key components.
  • Tools and resources for determining fair lease rates for farmland.
  • Methods for estimating the market value of agricultural land.
  • Average pricing for common custom farm services like land clearing and baling.

While specifically designed for women new to sole farm ownership, the "On My Own" workshops are open to all. These sessions also offer a unique opportunity for participants to connect and build a network of support with others facing similar challenges.

The workshops will be held across eight locations in Missouri, all starting at 10 am and running until noon. Here's a breakdown of the schedule:

  • May 14: Sedalia, Pettis County
  • June 4: Boonville, Cooper County
  • June 13: Clinton, Henry County
  • June 18: Warrensburg, Johnson County
  • July 23: California, Moniteau County
  • July 25: Versailles, Morgan County
  • July 30: Harrisonville, Cass County
  • August 6: Warsaw, Benton County

This initiative empowers women entering the agricultural leadership arena, equipping them with the knowledge and connections to confidently steer their farm businesses towards success. Visit to register online.
