Landowners in Pike County and nearby areas are encouraged to attend the Woodland Management Workshop on February 7 in Bowling Green. The event is hosted by the University of Missouri Extension in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation.
“Healthy woodlands don’t happen by chance. They require active management,” says Brian Schweiss, sustainable forestry specialist with MU Extension. The workshop aims to equip landowners with practical knowledge to manage their woodlands for long-term health, productivity, and enjoyment.
“This workshop will provide practical strategies you can put to work immediately,” Schweiss adds.
Attendees will explore key topics, including forest health, wildlife habitat, and invasive species control. Participants will learn to identify common threats to woodland vitality, such as disease, overcrowding, and poor regeneration.
The workshop will also cover ways to create diverse habitats that support desirable wildlife species and techniques for controlling invasive plants and pests.
Forestry and wildlife experts will provide real-world examples, insights, and resources to help landowners make informed decisions for their properties.
Rick Merritt, local resident and wildlife biologist, says, “Whether you own a few acres or hundreds, this workshop will provide tips and resources to help keep your woods healthy and productive.”
The workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bowling Green High School. Lunch is included. For details, contact Schweiss at 573-882-4775 or schweissb@missouri.edu.
