Missouri farm bureau pushes for I-44 expansion
Missouri Ag Connection - 12/08/2023

As Missouri gears up for the expansion of Interstate 70, the Missouri Farm Bureau is urging the state to also prioritize the expansion of another vital artery: Interstate 44.

Farm Bureau President Garrett Hawkins cited concerns from farmers and ranchers regarding the condition and capacity of the Joplin-to-St. Louis stretch of I-44, particularly around Rolla. Hawkins highlighted bottlenecks, heavy traffic volume, and the road's overall condition as major issues impacting agricultural operations, specifically those involving livestock transportation.

Hawkins emphasized the historical significance of I-44, noting its role as one of five interstate highways built upon the legendary U.S. Route 66. He also expressed support for improvements to I-57, connecting Sikeston, Missouri, to Chicago, citing the availability of federal funding for the project.

The Farm Bureau's stance aligns with Arkansas' push to extend I-57 southwestward from Sikeston to Little Rock, further enhancing regional connectivity and economic opportunities.
