$17.8 Million to Modernize Cape Girardeau Infrastructure
Missouri Ag Connection - 09/21/2020

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director Jeff Case announced that the USDA is investing over $17.8 million to complete improvements to the Cape Girardeau County Reorganized Common Sewer District's centralized sewer treatment system, benefiting 3,723 residents in its service area. This additional award brings USDA's total investment to $32,243,000 for this project.

"USDA Rural Development is delivering as promised with modern wastewater infrastructure. This investment will have a much-needed positive impact on the Fruitland area's rural economy" said Trump Administration Official State Director Case. "Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA has been working tirelessly to be a strong partner to rural Missouri in building stronger and healthier communities, because we know when rural America thrives, all of America thrives."

USDA is providing Cape Girardeau County Reorganized Common Sewer District (CGCRCSD) a $9,871,000 loan and $7,998,000 grant through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program. CGCRCSD is consolidating 20 existing sewer treatment facilities near Fruitland, Mo., taking them offline, and creating one central facility for the district to operate and maintain. The project includes the addition of 23 miles of collection lines, 19 duplex lift stations, 13 simplex grinder pumps, and a 425,000 gallon-per-day wastewater treatment facility.

"We developed a regionalization plan to eliminate over 20 of the small treatment systems and 450 individual septic systems. This plan is about to come to reality with the loan and grant package that Rural Development has put together for us," said CGCRCSD President Joe Tousignant. "With the project, we will continue to see the rural economy expand, along with a cleaner environment and increased quality of life."
