Wright Co. 4-H Hosts Youth Horse Workshop
Missouri Ag Connection - 11/07/2018

The first 4-H SPIN club for Wright County was held as a horse workshop with leader Jaci Ferguson. Six youth attended the workshop held in Mountain Grove.

4-H SPIN is a new delivery method for 4-H clubs. SPIN clubs (stands for Special Interest Short-Term Programs), allow youth to engage in a positive youth development educational setting with a project of their choice without the commitment of joining a year-round traditional 4-H club.

"SPIN clubs can be thought of as either one-project focused or more seasonal like sports," said Janice Weddle, County Engagement Specialist in 4-H Youth Development with University of Missouri Extension.

Typically, a SPIN club will only meet a few times rather than year-around like the traditional club model offers.

"SPIN clubs are nice for kids that have topics they are interested in exploring but are also busy with other interests. This is also great for busy volunteers as the commitment is for a set period rather than year-around," said Weddle.

The SPIN model is great for adults that have a talent or special interest they want to share with young people. It allows them to meet and engage in the positive outcomes 4-H has always offered while not being so demanding on a person's schedule.

Through the leadership provided by Jaci Ferguson, the horse workshop provided youth with the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in cutting-edge industry practices as well as basic horse knowledge. 4-H members gained skills in different breed knowledge, parts of the horse and horse equipment, and horse back riding.

Youth members included Ashley Haller, Jacob Haller, Evelyn Fry, Rachel Atchison, Kennedy Hall, and Sarah Smith.
