Backyard Poultry Workshop - Tips for Healthy Flocks

Backyard Poultry Workshop - Tips for Healthy Flocks

By Blake Jackson

University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist Patrick Davis notes the growing popularity of backyard poultry for both food and income.

To support this trend, MU Extension is partnering with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension to host a Backyard Laying Hen Workshop on Saturday, May 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the MU Extension Center in Barton County, Lamar.

MU Extension livestock specialist Heather Conrow and Lincoln University poultry specialist Tatijana Fisher will lead the workshop, covering essential management for healthy backyard flocks, biosecurity measures, licensing and labeling regulations, and egg processing, washing, and grading.

Participants will benefit from hands-on equipment demonstrations and practice candling and grading eggs.

“This workshop is designed for both experienced and novice small-scale poultry producers,” says Conrow. Fisher adds, “Whether you have a small number of chickens in your backyard or operate a thriving egg business at a farmers market, there is valuable information for everyone.” Conrow also encourages youth involvement, stating, “We highly encourage the younger generations to get involved in these kinds of projects.”

This free event requires registration by May 8 at https://extension.missouri.edu/events/backyard-laying-hen-workshop-3.

For more information, contact the MU Extension Center in Barton County or Patrick Davis at davismp@missouri.edu. This workshop offers valuable insights for anyone involved in or considering backyard poultry production.
