Federal Nutrition Guide Backs Pork Protein

Federal Nutrition Guide Backs Pork Protein

By Jamie Martin

The 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans were recently released by federal health and agriculture agencies. These guidelines provide advice on healthy eating habits and recognize pork as an important protein food that can be part of a balanced diet.

"America's pork producers appreciate the 2025 Dietary Guidelines putting pork front and center on the plate. They took note of producer concerns and rightly gave pork and other high-protein, nutrient-dense, and delicious meats their due when it comes to Americans' health and dietary habits," said Rob Brenneman, NPPC president-elect and pork producer from Washington, Iowa.

The updated nutrition guidance encourages families to eat a variety of protein foods, including red meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs. Pork is highlighted as a nutrient rich option that offers essential vitamins and minerals needed for healthy body function.

Pork provides high quality protein along with iron, zinc, and B vitamins. These nutrients help build strong muscles, improve energy levels, and support brain development. Health experts also note that introducing nutrient dense foods during childhood helps create lifelong healthy eating habits.

The guidelines advise parents to offer protein rich foods early and continue these choices throughout childhood. Pork products such as roasts, chops, and ham are affordable, widely available, and easy to prepare, making them a practical choice for many families.

The National Pork Producers Council welcomed the updated recommendations. The organization stated that the new guidelines reflect sound science and acknowledge the importance of animal based protein foods in meeting daily nutrition needs.

The new food guide design included in the guidelines encourages consumers to feel confident about enjoying their meals while maintaining balanced nutrition. This helps families make informed choices without feeling pressured by strict food limits.

Pork producers believe the updated guidelines will help strengthen consumer trust in pork products and support rural economies. Pork production remains an important part of agriculture and provides jobs and income in many farming communities.

The council plans to continue working with federal agencies to support future nutrition policies that protect public health and ensure pork remains a valued part of healthy family meals across the country.
