The University of Missouri Extension's Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer program now offers a DNA component, "Show-Me-Plus," providing valuable genetic insights for both sellers and buyers.
Jamie Courter, MU Extension's state beef genetics specialist, emphasizes the program's educational role, informing producers and buyers about the benefits of DNA testing. This can reveal more about a heifer's potential beyond physical appearance, aiding informed decision-making.
"For heifers with registered breeds, Show-Me-Plus leverages genomically enhanced EPDs," explains Courter. "For commercial heifers, commercial genomic tests provide valuable data."
Thiago Martins, MU Extension's state beef reproductive specialist, joins Courter to assist both producers and livestock specialists. Martins highlights the value of reproductive biotechnologies in improving efficiency and performance. Early conception translates to heavier calves, and artificial insemination allows for introducing superior genetics.
The overall goal remains to develop high-quality heifers for purchase, ones that seamlessly integrate into the buyer's breeding program. Courter and Martins express their commitment to educating producers on efficient heifer development strategies for optimal animal success.
The duo plans to visit farms and collaborate with livestock specialists to encourage wider program participation. "The Show-Me-Select program has seen tremendous growth in Missouri," Courter proudly states.
