Join Missouri Forest farming workshop

By Blake Jackson

Discover how to forage and earn an income from the forest at a forest farming workshop hosted in Morgan County, Missouri, on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will take place at the MU Land of the Osages Research Farm, located at 30118 Old 8 Road, Gravois Mills.

University of Missouri Extension natural resources specialist Joni Harper says the workshop will provide valuable insights into sustainable forest management and financial planning for small acreages.

Attendees will gain hands-on experience in techniques such as inoculating mushroom logs, with the added bonus of taking home their own inoculated log.

Participants will also sample forest-sourced foods, including ginseng tea, maple syrup, and cooked shiitake mushrooms, while viewing a display of woodland wreaths.

Harper notes that experts from the MU Extension, MU Center for Agroforestry, Missouri Department of Conservation, and the MU Central Missouri Research, Extension and Education Center will be on hand to teach practical skills. These include chain saw safety and how to conduct a prescribed burn, both critical for safe and effective forest management.

Whether you're interested in forest farming for personal use or exploring it as a business opportunity, this workshop offers the tools to get started.
