Learn Safe Land Management with Prescribed Burns

Learn Safe Land Management with Prescribed Burns

By Blake Jackson

Prescribed burning is an effective tool for managing native plant diversity and controlling unwanted vegetation when done correctly, but improper use can be risky and ineffective.

To help landowners learn safe and effective burning practices, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is hosting a prescribed burn workshop on October 4, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Schell-Osage Conservation Area.

Advance registration is required and can be completed online at https://mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/210610 or by calling MDC’s Clinton office at 660-885-6981. Before attending the in-person workshop, participants must complete a virtual prescribed burn course.

This online training, which costs $25, is a mandatory prerequisite, and attendees should bring their certificate of completion to the workshop.

Weather permitting, the workshop will include a demonstration burn. Participants are advised to wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts and pants made of natural fibers, leather gloves, safety glasses, and closed-toe boots.

For additional questions, contact Private Land Conservationist Jesse Bond at jesse.bond@mdc.mo.gov. Schell-Osage Conservation Area is located at 4662 S 2950 Road in Schell City.

This hands-on workshop provides a valuable opportunity for landowners to gain practical skills in safely conducting prescribed burns while enhancing their land management practices.
