Maries County earns Agri-Ready status for agriculture

By Blake Jackson

Maries County has officially been recognized as an Agri-Ready County by Missouri Farmers Care (MFC). This designation highlights the county’s commitment to supporting agriculture, its largest industry.

The announcement follows a unanimous vote by the Maries County Commission on July 25, 2024. Agriculture is a cornerstone of the county's economy, generating $282.7 million in economic output and supporting nearly 2,000 jobs, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

“Agri-Ready Designation is going to be a great thing for Maries county. This is a rural county and agriculture is our economic engine. We are pleased to support agriculture business and development opportunities,” said Maries County Presiding Commissioner, Vic Stratman.

“Support for agriculture in Maries County is strong and by embracing Agri-Ready County Designation, Maries County is promoting agricultural opportunity to strengthen the economic backbone of the county.”,” shared Missouri Farmers Care Executive Director Ashley McCarty.

As an Agri-Ready County, Maries County will benefit from MFC's support in promoting agricultural enterprise, attracting businesses, and enhancing workforce development. The county will also implement the Agriculture Education on the Move™ program in third-grade classrooms to foster agricultural literacy.

“This was a great day to see Maries County become an Agri-Ready Designated County,” said Representative Bennie Cook (R-Houston). “We already know this county is agriculture friendly, this additional step will advance Maries County’s agriculture. Having grown up on a small farm in Belle, I am particularly excited for this partnership.”

To achieve Agri-Ready County status, counties must demonstrate support for agriculture, including avoiding conflicting ordinances and promoting agricultural stewardship. Maries County has met these criteria, securing its position as a leader in agricultural development.
