Webinar series - growing tree fruits and nuts this fall

By Blake Jackson

This fall, the University of Missouri Extension is hosting a comprehensive six-session webinar series titled “Growing Tree Fruit, Nut Crops and Syrup Trees.”

The series, which kicks off on Tuesday, September 10, will run weekly from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and will cover a range of topics essential for successful tree crop production.

The sessions will delve into the cultivation of apples, pears, nuts, specialty fruits such as pawpaw and persimmon, and maple syrup.

Justin Keay, a field specialist in horticulture with University of Missouri Extension, emphasizes the importance of understanding the requirements for establishing these perennial crops to ensure long-term success. “Perennial tree crops can provide many years of harvests, but it’s important to understand what it takes to successfully establish these crops to help ensure long-term success,” Keay notes. He adds, “Annual maintenance such as pruning, fertilization, pest scouting and disease management will help ensure growers maximize their annual harvests.”

For those who may miss any live sessions, recordings will be available. Registration also grants access to previously recorded sessions covering site selection, planting, fertility management, weed control, insect and disease management, and the marketing and economics of fruit production.

Limited scholarships are available for beginning farmers in the St. Louis area and surrounding counties. Scholarships are awarded during checkout upon registration.
