Missouri Biodiesel - A Cleaner and Renewable Fuel Solution

Missouri Biodiesel - A Cleaner and Renewable Fuel Solution

By Blake Jackson

The Biodiesel Coalition of Missouri (BCM) celebrates National Biodiesel Day by highlighting the significant economic, environmental, and energy security benefits of biodiesel, a fuel produced within Missouri.

National Biodiesel Day, observed annually on March 18, honors Rudolf Diesel, who originally designed his engine to run on vegetable oil. March 18, biodiesel, derived from soybean oil and agricultural byproducts, continues this legacy as a cleaner, renewable fuel. Missouri stands as a leading producer, contributing to both its economy and environmental sustainability.

Biodiesel contributes $2 billion to Missouri’s GDP and supports over 5,500 jobs. With an annual production capacity of 257 million gallons, it bolsters rural economies while offering a dependable, renewable energy source.

“Biodiesel isn’t just a cleaner fuel option, it’s a Missouri-made solution that enhances engine performance, supports local farmers and strengthens the state’s economy,” said Matt Amick, executive director of BCM. “By increasing access to biodiesel infrastructure and expanding its use, we’re ensuring a stronger, more sustainable future for Missouri.”

Biodiesel offers substantial environmental advantages, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 86 percent and lowering particulate emissions. It also enhances engine performance through improved lubricity and cetane levels.

To further educate the public, BCM is releasing two videos: one featuring industry leaders and farmers discussing biodiesel's benefits, and another showcasing its production and applications.

BCM encourages fuel retailers, farmers, and policymakers to support biodiesel in three key ways. Businesses can utilize Missouri biodiesel incentives, including grants from the Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority, which cover up to 50 percent of project costs for infrastructure upgrades.

Consumers can choose biodiesel blends at the pump, incentivized by Missouri tax credits for retailers offering B5 or higher blends. Industry members can engage with BCM to advocate for policies supporting biodiesel growth.
