Missouri crop conference - emerging corn diseases

By Blake Jackson

The University of Missouri Extension is gearing up to host its annual Crop Management Conference on December 4-5 at the Columbia Hilton Garden Inn and Conference Center. This year's event promises to provide valuable insights and practical advice for farmers and crop advisers.

One of the key topics of discussion will be emerging corn diseases in Missouri. Mandy Bish, a MU Extension plant pathologist, will delve into the details of corn stunt disease, a relatively new threat to the state's corn crop. Attendees will learn how to identify this disease and understand its potential impact on future seasons.

Iviar Valmorbida, a crops entomologist, will provide guidance on identifying corn leafhopper, the insect vector responsible for transmitting corn stunt disease. This knowledge will be crucial for implementing effective control measures.

Bish will also address the increasing concern of tar spot in Missouri's cornfields. Additionally, she will share the latest information on red crown rot disease, a newly identified threat to soybean crops in the state.

John Lory, a MU Extension nutrient management specialist, will discuss strategies for optimizing nitrogen management in corn, particularly in the context of post-drought conditions.

Another important topic will be the recent changes in pesticide application licensing requirements. Rusty Lee, a MU Extension agronomist, will explain the new regulations set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Agriculture.

These changes will impact certified applicators and those working under their supervision, particularly in areas like fumigation and aerial application.

The conference will also feature presentations on government programs designed to support drought-resilient conservation practices.

By attending this conference, farmers and crop advisers can stay informed about the latest challenges and opportunities in crop management.
