The University of Missouri Extension is offering a Feeder Cattle Grading, Marketing, and Feeding Workshop for cattle producers.
Patrick Davis, a livestock specialist with MU Extension, explains, “Providing education to cattle producers in the areas of cattle feeding, grading and marketing helps them make management decisions to add value to their cattle operation.”
The workshop aims to help producers understand calf feedlot performance and carcass characteristics, building a reputation that leads to premium prices for calves post-weaning.
MU Extension is partnering with the Show Me Youth Ag Academy, Missouri State University, and the Barton County Cattlemen’s Association to host the event at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, at the First Baptist Church’s Family Life Outreach Center in Lamar, Missouri.
Davis adds, “The Barton County Cattlemen’s Association meeting will focus on various aspects of the steers enrolled in the Missouri Steer Feedout program.”
This program, which enrolled 43 steers from six farms in mid-November, provides hands-on experience in feeding, managing, and marketing feedlot cattle. Participants also receive valuable feeding and carcass data to improve operations and marketing strategies.
The meeting will feature three guest speakers: Lonnie Peetz, a USDA market reporter, who will discuss grading and pricing; Jim Schiltz, a field representative with Joplin Regional Stockyards, who will talk about marketing and buying feeder cattle; and Robert Jones, a nutritionist with Great Plains Livestock, who will cover nutritional management.
The event is free, with a meal provided by the Show Me Youth Ag Academy. Registration is required by November 30, and attendees can sign up online or contact Brett Faubion at 417-262-4037or bfaubion789@missouri.edu. For more information, contact Davis at 417-276-3313 or davismp@missouri.edu.
