The University of Missouri Board of Curators has unanimously approved the naming of the Roy Blunt Soil Testing and Research Laboratory at the Fisher Delta Research, Extension and Education Center (FD-REEC) in Portageville, Missouri. This decision honors former U.S. Senator Roy Blunt for his longstanding support of agricultural initiatives. The official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for April 5.

Former Sen. Blunt expressed his gratitude for being part of the initiative, emphasizing the importance of the new facility in fostering research and educational opportunities for future generations. The laboratory, funded by $4.6 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, the state of Missouri, and the Fisher Delta FD-REEC, will facilitate research and innovation across various agricultural programs.

Chair of the UM Board of Curators, Robin Wenneker, highlighted Senator Blunt's dedication to agriculture and the significance of recognizing his contributions by naming the facility after him. The project, led by the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, will feature advanced soil, water, and plant-tissue testing capabilities, as well as space for rice production and entomology research.

President of the University of Missouri, Mun Choi, praised Senator Blunt's support for public higher education and the university's land-grant mission. Choi emphasized the importance of honoring Blunt's legacy and strengthening agriculture in Missouri, particularly in the Bootheel region.

The Soil Testing and Research Laboratory represents the university's commitment to innovation and collaboration in addressing pressing global challenges. Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Christopher S. Daubert, emphasized the significance of the facility in enhancing research quality and supporting Missouri farmers.

Chad Higgins, chief engagement officer for the UM System and vice chancellor of MU Extension, expressed gratitude for Senator Blunt's efforts in securing funding for the laboratory. He highlighted the facility's role in supporting agricultural innovation and contributing to the goal of doubling the value of Missouri's agricultural industry while preserving natural resources.

The Roy Blunt Soil Testing and Research Laboratory underscores the University of Missouri's commitment to advancing agricultural research and education, with Senator Blunt's legacy serving as a beacon of inspiration for future endeavors in the field.
