The Southwest Missouri Spring Forage Conference is scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, at the Oasis Hotel and Convention Center, located at 2546 N. Glenstone Avenue in Springfield.
Dr. Gary Bates, department head of Plant Science at the University of Tennessee, will serve as the keynote speaker. According to Patrick Davis, livestock field specialist with the University of Missouri Extension, Bates will share his insights on “looking back at advancements in forage production” based on his extensive career in research, extension, and education.
Before his current role, Dr. Bates spent 12 years directing the University of Tennessee Beef and Forage Center and nearly 30 years as a forage extension specialist.
Dr. Bates efforts have centered on improving forage management practices to enhance livestock production's economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
Following his keynote, Bates will deliver a second talk after lunch titled “Steps to Successful Forage Establishment,” focusing on innovations in seeding technology.
The conference will also feature numerous breakout sessions covering a wide range of forage and livestock topics. “For further education, conference participants can attend several breakout sessions,” says Davis.
Topics include grazing cover crops, using annuals for forages, establishing native warm-season grasses, managing soil fertility, and combating fescue toxicosis with forage legumes.
Other sessions explore matching beef cattle to their environment, flexible stocking rates, mineral nutrition, custom grazing experiences, and livestock safety for warm-season grasses.
Additionally, specialized sessions for sheep and goat producers will be offered, addressing subjects like solar grazing, forage options, and market outlook. A panel discussion will also explore opportunities for grazing sheep and goats profitably.
A trade show will accompany the event, featuring agricultural businesses and organizations showcasing products and services. “If interested in becoming an exhibitor or sponsor, contact Jody Wade at the Webster County Soil and Water Conservation District office,” says Davis.
Check-in begins at 8 a.m., with sessions running from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration, including a banquet lunch, is $55 per person and must be completed by February 13. Walk-ins will not be accepted.
