Strip-Till Expo Helps Farmers Cut Costs

Strip-Till Expo Helps Farmers Cut Costs

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota farmers facing rising costs and changing weather conditions will have the opportunity to explore practical farming solutions at the 2026 Strip-Till Expo, organized by the University of Minnesota Extension. The event focuses on helping farmers improve efficiency while maintaining strong crop performance.

The Expo will take place on September 9, 2026, at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center in Lamberton, Minnesota. It provides a hands-on learning experience where farmers can see strip-till practices in real field conditions.

Strip-till farming is gaining attention as a method that reduces costs while supporting soil health. Research and on-farm experience show that this system helps lower soil loss and maintain or improve profitability. By reducing the number of field passes, farmers can save fuel, reduce labor, and limit equipment wear.

“With today’s economic pressures, farmers are looking for systems that improve efficiency without sacrificing productivity,” said Jodi DeJong-Hughes, UMN Extension Educator. “Strip-till is one option that’s showing strong results, and this event gives farmers a chance to see it in action before making decisions on their own operations.”

A major highlight of the Expo is the equipment demonstration. Farmers can compare different strip-till systems working in the same field under similar conditions. This helps them understand which system may work best for their operations.

Participants will also learn from experienced farmers and university researchers. These experts share insights on soil health, crop performance, and long-term farm sustainability.

Interest in strip-till continues to grow as Minnesota invests in soil health programs. Funding support and technical assistance are available through local conservation groups, making it easier for farmers to adopt these practices.

The event is free to attend, but pre-registration requested. For more information and to register, visit: z.umn.edu/STexpo
